Floating Away
I was blessed growing up. I had the extreme fortune of growing up in a campground during the summers. I had an endless and rotating supply of friends. Certain friends would come every year on the same weeks and it always gave me something to look forward to. I tell you that to tell you that I spent copious amounts on time in the water. From when I got up, until it got dark, and sometimes even after that, my days were spent in the water.
Sometimes we would play hard and rough house, playing Marco Polo or "King of the Dock" where you would try to push everyone off the dock into the water and the last person on the dock was the "king" and it was their job to try and stay king, buy pushing everyone else off. I wasn't ever the king.
Another game we would play we dubbed "float"... to see who could just float on the surface of the water the longest. You may think floating isnt that hard, and realistically it isnt. Its pretty simple to arrange your body on the surface of the water so that you stay afloat with minimal effort. It was the quiet that some people couldn't stand. The peacefulness can drive some people crazy. Hearing your heartbeat, the blood wooshing through your veins, the quiet stillness of it can be hypnotic...but for others it can be uncomforatble. I loved it. Still do.
Now as an adult I prefer a "Float Tank". Using a float tank—also known as sensory deprivation or isolation tank—offers a range of mental and physical benefits. By immersing yourself in a pod of warm, Epsom salt-infused water, the body becomes effortlessly buoyant, easing pressure on joints and muscles. This deep state of relaxation helps reduce stress, anxiety, and cortisol levels, while also promoting mental clarity and enhanced creativity. Many users report improved sleep, pain relief, and a greater sense of mindfulness after sessions. Floating offers a unique space to disconnect from overstimulation and reconnect with inner calm.If you ever have the opportunity to experience one, I wholeheartedly suggest you do! I used to go once a month, but the place local to me has since closed..so I am on the hunt for a new place to float!
